Obsessions & Fascinations
Pictures Are Like Books To Me
We at Photography Playground love photography projects. I lovingly call them Obsessions & Fascinations. Because photography projects arise out of a fascination for a specific subject. Very quickly that fascination can turn into an obsession. Nothing wrong with that.
All of a sudden you see photo opportunities everywhere and you find yourself doing odd things because you just have to follow that creative impulse.
This monthly blog series is an ode to the obsessed and fascinated humans among us where we make room for photographers to showcase their photography projects. This month we’re gonna take a look into the world of Pedro Baptista.

Photography Project by Pedro Baptista
“Photography is a possible extension of myself.”
These are the words of Pedro, a passionate hobby photographer interested and a bit obsessed with odd things, old stuff and details that no one else sees.
He has the urge to show an object from unexpected angles, to tell a different story about an existing thing.
“I have pleasure in taking pictures of something that I know the audience might not understand, but is still somehow moved by the way the image presents itself”.
“Pictures are like books to me”
Pedro is an explorer, looking to give a new spin to an already told story by looking at it from a different perspective. He tries to aim for the not so obvious and finds beauty in the undiscovered. You can really feel that looking at Pedro´s pictures.
He wants to show the world a different way of looking at things around us. Instead of telling a story we already know and saw a thousand times, he looks for the secret. This secret, this unknown surprise shows the rest of us something new which opens our eyes.
Image plays a huge role in our perceptions as humans and Pedro takes photography as a possible extension of himself.
Photography was always part of Pedro´s life, ever since he was a kid he had cameras. Mostly they were old and cheap cameras that belonged to his family but last year he bought a second-hand camera for himself.
“It was maybe 10 years old but I figured it had more than enough quality for what I want – I want to capture an image and a camera that was great 10 years ago is still amazing for me today.”
“Photography is a possible extension of myself”
Over the years he feels that his photographs evolved, just like life progressed. He feels he knows better now what he wants to convey when taking pictures.
What I find really interesting in the perspective of Pedro, is that through photography he learns a lot about people. In a way, he triggers the audiences eye to change their view, whether they want it or not. His main objective really is about how the world presents itself and how we, as humans, perceive it.
“As life progressed, I started to be more and more interested in what images convey. Pictures are like books to me – a way of looking at the world from other peoples eyes, perspectives and experiences”.
“It all starts with what you believe in. The rest will follow.”
So what are the reactions he actually receives from his audience, from family, friends and his followers on Instagram?
According to Pedro, this has been pretty surprising to him. He gets a lot of positive feedback on his pictures and he can´t deny that this is something very fulfilling.
“I never thought that people would like even half of what I do”.
I would like to invite and encourage you all to start looking at things that are familiar and try to find the unfamiliar.
Search for the secrets, the back corners, the undiscovered. Walk on the streets and perceive your surroundings from a different perspective.
You might get surprised and inspired by something you thought you knew.
Maybe you´ll get passionate about seeing things in a different way and let´s be honest, passion really is the main motivation for everything we do.
Let us know in the comments how you look for undiscovered perspectives!
